McCloud River Waterfalls
The McCloud River offers three spectacular waterfalls within easy driving access, and hiking along a river trail. Ponderosa pine forests provide cover for squirrels, chipmunks, many songbirds, bobcat and an occasional black bear. The riverine habitat provides homes to American dippers, belted kingfisher, Canadian geese and river otter. Willow flycatcher, osprey, and a myriad of neotropical migrant songbirds inhabit the willows and snags.
A multi-use 10 mile river trail which begins at the Lower Falls picnic area and proceeds east to Algoma campground, offering many viewing opportunities of the crystal clear river and associated wildlife. In the upper river reaches above upper falls watch for the unique McCloud River redband trout.
Begin your adventure at Lower Falls. Proceed east on Highway 89 past the town of McCloud, turning right at the Fowlers Campground exit 5 miles east of the town. Look for the binocular sign along Highway 89.
Follow the signs to nearby Lower Falls. The parking area has picnic tables and a viewing platform overlooking this waterfall and it's surrounding rocks and pools...a favorite fishing and swimming spot.
You can hike or drive along the river to reach Middle Falls (pictured above) and Upper Falls. Middle Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Northern California, while Upper Falls (the most difficult of all to view) is a wild cascade of water that drops into a circular turquoise pool. The hiking trail begins at Lower Falls and fllows the river eastward...it is challenging and rewarding. If hiking is not your style, take the driving loop, a gravel river road with easy signs to direct you.
