22 Things to Do in the Autumn in Siskiyou County
The treasures are in the journey, not only the destination..
FallShasta Siskiyou County is California's treasure at the top of the state. It's a land of incredible scenic beauty, friendly small towns, activities and adventures for everyone! Here we offer our Autumn list of Things to Do while visiting Siskiyou County in the beautiful months of September through early December.

Our list of activities is presented in no particular order, and the numbers are not intended to imply a rating. Our intent is to serve as a guide and an introduction, to inspire you to try something new, something you've never thought of before, something you've been too busy to notice, something you've always dreamed of doing.

The treasures are in the journey, not only the destination. Take time to enjoy the adventures that await at every side road. Bon voyage and welcome to Siskiyou County in the fall.



1. Feast on the Fall Colors The diversity of climate and vegetation in this vast and varied county creates "must-see" areas for fall color...see our Fall Colors page for details.

2. Octoberfest in McCloud Great German food, specialty beers, good fellowship and fun, and wonderful old German music in the scenic community of McCloud each year in early October. Event at St Joseph's Parish Hall. Visit the McCloud Chamber website for details.

3. History abounds! at the Siskiyou County Museum in Yreka, 530-842-336. Exhibits emphasize trapping, gold, cattle and agriculture, with an interactive area including seven historic buildings, living history events and tours. Visit...you'll love it!

4. Gaze at a Million Dollars Fancy finding a gold nugget? Stop by the Siskiyou County Courthouse in Yreka to view the largest display of gold south of Alaska. The interpretive display is arranged according to the site from which the gold was taken, and includes old photos, descriptions and recollections of the miners. On display are the many forms of gold found in the area, including huge nuggets, flour gold and gold dust.

5. Spot a Rare Bird View nature's treasures during the autumn bird migration at the Klamath and the Tulelake Wildlife Refuges. Over 200 bird species and 50 mammal species have been identified in eastern Siskiyou County. And don't miss the Butte Valley Wildlife Area.

6. Discover the Butte Valley National Grassland This recently designated US National Grasslands west of Macdoel has auto tours allowed. Follow California Department of Fish and Game signs off Highway 97. Large pronghorn antelope herds can be seen, as well as abundant eagles (both bald eagles and golden), redtail hawks, and pelicans. Sandhill cranes nest on the grasslands. Photo opportunities are plentiful!

7. Connect with the Siskiyou Arts Council: Art events through the year...visit their great web site for the latest!

8. Get a Great Pumpkin at Hunter Orchards Pumpkin Patch in beautiful Shasta Valley. :ocated between Gazelle and Grenada at 14431 Old Westside Rd., Grenada, just take either Gazelle exit from Interstate 5 and follow the pumpkin signs. This excellent local orchard also has apples, colorgul gourds and other delicioul fall produce. This is a great adventure for kids....call 530 436-2532 for more info.

9. Drive the State of Jefferson Scenic Byway for spectacular fall colors along the Klamath River. The community of Happy Camp lies two hours downriver from Interstate 5, and is a perfect destination for travelers enjoying the autumn colors, beauty and history of the river canyon. 10. The Mount Shasta International Film Fest takes place on an early October weekend at Coming Attractions Theatres in Mount Shasta, and the theater at the College of the Siskiyous-Weed campus. The Festival brings an unbelievable three days of the finest variety of cinema anywhere, with guest filmmakers, amazing films, and a free Friday night GALA party. 11. Explore the Sacramento River through interactive displays and activities at The River Exchange Center in Dunsmuir. Check out their monthy events and become a member while you're there, supporting the fine stewardship work of this organization.

12. Ride the Pumpkin Train on the Yreka Western Railroad. It's celebration of fall that is held October 6, 13, 20, 27, 2007, 2 PM departure. Enjoy a scenic train aboard the Yreka Western's Railroad to area farmland for pumpkin picking and refreshments. $10 per person (includes choice of pumpkin). Children must be accompanied by a ticket holding adult.

13. Enjoy Home Town Football: Teams from every high school in the county and the College of the Siskiyous play their hearts out on Friday and Saturday evenings through the fall. Come to our home town games and cheer for your favorites.

14. Boo! Bring the kids to enjoy small town Halloween fun at Dunsmuir's Halloween Carnival and Fall Festival on October 31 (with a Jack-O-Lantern carving contest, costume contest, and the annual Girl Scout Carnival....contact the Dunsmuir Chamber at 530-235-2177) and at Weed's Halloween Fright Night Carnival on October 31, (a Haunted House, game & food booths...call 530-938-3056), in McCloud, A Children's Carnival will be held at the McCloud Elementary School, and in Yreka kids can enjoy the Hotel Halloween haunted house at AmeriHost Inn 6-8pm for the kids.

15. Hunters take to the Woods and Fields with the opening of hunting seasons throughout the area. Hire a guide to make your expeience the best yet! Check our hunting page for the latest links and information.

16. The Nutcracker from Eugene Ballet Company is an annual treat at College of the Siskiyous Theater each November...this year on Nov. 16, 2007. Presented by the Mt. Shasta Concert Association, this family celebration creates an evening filled with music, dance and the spirit of love. Eugene Ballet Company's Nutcracker captures the best of the imagination with its colorful sets, beautiful costumes, and sparkling choreography. 17. Come to Butte Valley in November for The Annual Butte Valley Raptor Rally, to view and learn about raptors. Raptors are the birds-of-prey and include hawks, eagles, falcons, owls and several other related species. Butte Valley is becoming widely known as a premiere place to see these birds spend the winter. Free field trips meet on Saturday and Sunday mornings at the Dorris flagpole at 9AM to carpool around the valley. The trip should conclude around 3PM. Bring something to drink, lunch, binoculars and field guides if you have then. A spotting scope will be available and maybe one or two extra pair of binoculars. This event is sponsored by Klamath Basin Audubon Society and will be led by an expert in raptor identification. See the Klamath Basin Audubon Society web site for details.

18. Drive around Scott Valley on the Highway 3 - Eastside Road loop....see our web page Scenic Drives in Gold Country of Western Siskiyou County. This 48 mile circular drive is a pleasant half day trip that will give you a true picture of many of the faces of Scott Valley, and especially lovely when fall colors paint the valley and hillsides. Head south off Highway 3 onto Eastside Road in Fort Jones. Follow Eastside past the original site of old Fort Jones, the cemetery, and many ranches all the way to Callahan. Then head back on Hwy 3 to Etna, then Greenview, and finally back to Fort Jones.

19. Polish Off your Holiday Shopping at the Annual Arts & Crafts Fair on November 17 - see the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds website in Yreka.

20. Enjoy the Yreka Statues: Enjoy many historical statues throughout town including the gold panning miner at the central I-5 offramp; the fire hall statue; the Native American Park statue; the dragon and giant cow out on I-5...an incredible collection of art for the public to enjoy.

21. Live Music and entertainment throughout the month at Sengthong's Blue Sky Room in Dunsmuir and the Stage Door Cabaret and Coffeehouse in Mt. Shasta. Great online schedules and updated information....and a wonderful time always!
