Ice fishing is popular in northern states, and Siskiyou County is one of the few places in California you can enjoy easy access to ice fishing. Just eight miles from the City of Mt. Shasta sits Castle Lake - a beautiful mountain cirque that freezes in the winter, and offers excellent ice fishing.
Even if the rainbow and brook trout aren’t biting, you’ll enjoy unbelievable views.
Other ice fishing is available, including Juanita Lake in Butte Valley (it’s unplowed, so plan to ski in to lakeside). Don’t forget: always test ice thickness before going beyond shallow water, dress warm, and keep an eye on the weather!
